hypnotherapy for addiction
When most people think of addiction, they think of substance addiction—drugs and alcohol usually springing first to mind. And, indeed, these are addictions that we treat regularly in our hypno-psychotherapy practice here in the UK.

Alcohol, cocaine, prescription pain killers and foods such as chocolate are examples of substances that many people become addicted to. But addiction can also come in other, different guises that don't really involve substances at all.

Examples of this include gambling, sex, the Internet, shopping, work, and gaming. All these have the power to disrupt, cause havoc, and eventually ruin a person's life. But regardless of the particular substance, activity or behaviour involved, all addictions share one similarity: The addict has lost the ability to choose—choice has given way to dependence.

Addiction is a serious disease;
it will end with jail, mental institutions, or death."
Russel Brand

Addiction and Feelings

The fact is that people become addicted because the addiction serves a purpose. The addict uses substances or engages in addictive behaviours for a whole host of different reasons. Addiction might begin as a bit of an adventure, or because the person feels like a little recreation, a reward for getting through the day or the week. Or the addictive substance or behaviour might be used as an escape from a difficult reality; in order to cope with uncomfortable emotions and feelings such as anger, guilt, loneliness, boredom etc; to relieve pain; or in order to fit in with a particular group.

No matter its origin, though, addicts use substances and behaviours in order to cope with uncomfortable feelings. Yet sooner or later the addicted person finds themselves overwhelmed by a very difficult feeling indeed—the feeling of shame.

The problem is, of course, that the addictive substance or behaviour offers only temporary relief—a brief distraction, a short respite—and what starts off as a release, an apparent friend, fast becomes a vicious enemy. And now the person finds him or herself locked into the terrible cycle of addiction as it continues on in its awful, inexorable downward spiral.

The Role of Hypnotherapy in Recovery

With our unique CHI-HypnoTherapy™ approach, which uses hypnotic regression, Ego State Therapy, and other psychotherapeutic modalities, can effectively help addicted people to free themselves of their addiction. It can help you put the pieces of the puzzle back together and move on with your life.

But it can only do this when the addicted person is prepared to fully admit that he or she has a problem, is prepared to stop making excuses and accept the responsibility to really do something about it. The simple truth is that in order for you to end your addiction you will need to work at it.
