overcome fear of heights
Acrophobia, or the fear of heights, is an anxiety disorder that we regularly treat here at our hypno-psychotherapy practice in the UK. It is something that is believed to affect around 5% of the general population.

Though often incorrectly referred to as 'vertigo*', true acrophobia is an extreme and irrational fear of being in high places. For the acrophobic individual, however, perception is all—a high place may be no more than just a few rungs on a ladder, or on a mountain road, for example.

(*Vertigo is the sensation that the head is spinning or swimming which occurs when the head is not actually spinning. It can be triggered by any movement such as quickly standing up or sitting down, or simply by a change in the individual's visual perspective.)

Symptoms of Acrophobia

While always inconvenient and anxiety-inducing, acrophobia can also be dangerous, particularly if the person is involved with a job that requires working high above the ground, such as in construction, or long-distance driving where the person must travel over high bridges, along cliffs or mountain roads. The terrible feelings of anxiety that acrophobia produces can so easily be transformed into feelings of genuine panic when the sufferer is high up — and a person who is in the throes of panic can be in no position to think clearly and get him or herself down safely.

The actual symptoms of acrophobia are very similar to other anxiety disorders. Commonly, feelings such as increased heart rate, palpitations, rapid breathing and shortness of breath, as well as dry mouth and nausea are amongst the physical reactions most frequently reported by those who suffer from fear of heights and other phobias.

Often, the person suffering from acrophobia adopts an avoidance strategy that can really restrict his or her daily activities as well as determining and adversely affecting such things as accommodation, holiday location, the ability to visit friends and relatives, and travel. It can also impact and on their work life.

Though it's quite natural to have a healthy respect for heights as part of the instinctive survival mechanism with which we are all born, the term phobia is assigned to those who experience an extreme and essentially irrational fear in this regard.

Origins of Acrophobia The Causes of Fear of Heights

Usually, those suffering from acrophobia have undergone a frightening experience or experiences in their past that have produced a learned or 'conditioned response' to the stimulus of height. Such experiences may often be beyond the conscious recall of the person, since they may have happened years ago, in early childhood.

Sometimes, this phobia can be installed by proxy, as it were, with the child 'learning' the fear from an adult during his or her early formative years. This is a psychological process known as 'emotional contagion'—the child observes the adult reacting with fear or anxiety and automatically becomes conditioned with this same fearful response him or herself.

Whatever its cause, acrophobia is a fear that emanates from the part of the mind that we call the subconscious.

This, of course, is the home and repository of all our beliefs and the gererator of all of our feelings. It is from here that our feelings and emotions flow and so it is to the subconscious that we must turn for any really effective acrophobia treatment.
